Writers Workshop

We use the Writers' Workshop model for teaching writing.  The key feature of Writers' Workshop is that we write for most of the writing time!  The schedule is usually as follows:
  • Mini-lesson by teacher (10 minutes)
  • Student writing time (30-40 minutes)
  • Share and peer feedback (10-15 minutes)
We start most days with a mini lesson about a particular skill needed for our writing. These skills and style traits can include: dialogue, paragraphing, lead sentences, vivid imagery, persuasive vocabulary, etc.  Then comes the most important part of the workshop, student writing.  During this time us teachers will conference with students and provide assistance and feedback.  Lastly, we share our writing with fellow peers and offer each other feedback on the positives, and what needs improvement in a piece.
